How to watermark a photo
- Open the photo in the editor above.
- Type your watermark text, for example
© Anna Smith 2026or your website address. - Adjust the look: size (as a percentage of the image width, so it looks the same on large and small photos), opacity, color and position.
- Choose Tiled to repeat the text diagonally across the whole image — much harder to crop out.
- Click Apply watermark and download. The preview shows exactly what you will get.
Watermark best practices
- Keep it readable but subtle. An opacity of 30–50% is noticeable without ruining the photo.
- Pick a contrasting color. White with a soft shadow works on most photos; use dark text on bright, snowy or white-background images.
- Corner vs. center. A corner watermark is easy to crop away but looks professional for portfolios. A center or tiled watermark is better for proofs you send to clients before payment.
- Use a short text. A name or domain is enough. Long sentences become unreadable at small sizes.
- Keep an unwatermarked original. Tools4U always saves a new copy, so your original stays untouched on your device.
What a watermark can and cannot do
A visible watermark discourages casual copying and makes sure your name travels with the image when it is shared. It is not a legal requirement for copyright — in most countries you own the copyright to your photos automatically — and a determined person can still edit it out. For valuable work, combine a watermark with sharing only reduced-size copies. Our guide on how to watermark photos covers this in more detail.
